AP - Annoyingly Precise Style

We've all been frustrated with it at some point in our college experience. For myself, it's when I feel I've written a good piece of news or pr release that AP style comes up and bites me like a viper. At times it feels impossible to write something that completely conforms to AP style. All the rules weigh us down and make writing a chore. Is there any point in pressing on and becoming masters of AP style?

For me, the answer is simple: yes! It is essential that we all learn the fundamentals and details of Associated Press style. I didn't always feel this way, though. I had to take a step back and look at the 'why' of AP style. So, why do we bother to write in AP style?

Answer: Clarity and uniformity for the reader.

Our audiences need to understand what we're saying. Really, we should be grateful that we have a system that helps us write for understanding. I don't know about you, but I hate reading jargon from companies and organizations. It does them no good to send out messages that they think people will understand. AP style allows us as pr writers to turn technical jargon into coherent communication.

Aside from being able to write for understanding and uniformity, I'm glad we have AP style simply because it provides me with a chance to command the English language and preserve it. I think we would all agree that when we know how to say and write things properly, it feels good.

Yes, AP style is annoyingly precise. Yes, it is frustrating to try and learn it all. But think of how it will benefit us in our career paths if we can successfully demonstrate a sound knowledge of AP style.
